Curriculum Vitae

Areas of Expertise

My expertise includes academic and direct practice working with chronic and terminal illness, trauma events, and complicated grief. I have a specialization in work with the veteran and LGBTQ+ elder communities. Prior to coming to academia, I worked in a variety of clinical settings to include mental health, geriatrics, palliative and hospice care, and complicated grief and bereavement.

Teaching Philosophy

The social work profession requires individuals who can think critically, display cultural humbleness, empower clients, and adhere to the ethical values of the profession. Therefore, I strive to ensure these same elements are the backbone of my teaching style and philosophy. Teaching students to think critically starts with challenging them, through curriculum design, classroom interactions, and field experience to start asking questions such as, "What do I think about this? How do I support this? Why is this important?" It is through this critical thinking process that students grow into professional social workers.

Outside Interests

I maintain a small clinical practice for clients who are home-bound due to chronic and terminal illness. I am active in community and professional volunteer work with numerous agencies that support the LGBTQI+, veteran, and aging communities.
