Teaching Philosophy

As a social work educator, I believe that I am training students to be my future professional colleagues. For me, this entails the inclusion of real-world practice experience to the classroom by offering examples of cases and situations that contextualize the skills and concepts being covered in a course.  I incorporate experiential learning, cooperative learning, projects, themes, and individual work that engage and activate students’ learning with the aim of providing concrete, usable skills and tools to that will translate to their workplace settings.

Every student brings gifts and talents to the classroom and I see it as my role to not only encourage student to utilize these skills but to incorporate them into their practice as a parallel to the work they will be doing with their clients as professional social work practitioners. By doing this in an explicit, intentional manner, I hope to provide students the opportunity and framework to continuously develop their self-awareness that results in culturally competent, ethical social work practice.
