Curriculum Vitae

Areas of Expertise

My areas of expertise include professional counselor identity and development, at-risk youth identification and intervention, student engagement in the online environment, perceptions of the online learning experience, career awareness and exploration for under-served populations, and the assessment and management of traumatic emotional experiences.

Teaching Philosophy

My personal belief is that the core of effective teaching is student engagement, and the key to student engagement is establishing relationships with students. I believe learning is a function of creating open dialogue, exchanging ideas where it is not solely an emphasis on right or wrong answers, but on student personal experiences and world view. We are a diverse university and I believe that part of my job is to help all students find their voice. For this to occur, students must consistently and constantly feel welcomed, safe, respected, and valued.

I strive to vary course assignments so that students can have a choice of how they want to demonstrate mastery of a topic. I employ strategies and techniques that are inclusive and sensitive to culture and world view. With the use of technology learners of all kinds can express themselves in a manner that they do best!

Outside Interests

Interests outside of the university include spending time with family, especially our two grandchildren. I also enjoy traveling, reading, family genealogy, and amateur photography.
