Ruben Renteria is not the first member of his family to attend college. It is his hope, however, to become the first to earn a bachelor’s degree. A 2010 graduate of Warren High School, Ruben is a 19-year-old education major at Our Lady of the Lake University.

“He wants to become a science teacher,” says Ruben’s mother, Angelita Renteria. “I’m very proud of my son.”

Angelita dropped out of school in sixth grade and later earned a general equivalency degree. Ruben’s father, Ruben A. Renteria, graduated from high school but did not attend college. Angelita’s oldest daughter, 30-year-old Lisa Hernandez, earned a certificate from St. Philip's College.

Angelita is thrilled with Ruben's experience at OLLU. She sent in her RSVP for Family Weekend early. She did not want to miss out on the first-time event with Ruben and Lisa.

Family Weekend drew hundreds of people to campus on Feb. 25 for a fun-filled day of family activities. Those who came to Family Weekend received a Continental breakfast, a special family blessing in Sacred Heart Chapel, a presentation and question-and-answer session on academics, student life, financial aid, career services, and advising, lunch in Chapel Auditorium, a tailgate event and two exciting OLLU basketball games.

OLLU's commitment to a Family Relations program that integrates services in Academic Affairs, Enrollment Management, Student Life and Mission and Ministry grew out of a generous gift in 2010 from Bill Greehey, chairman of the board at NuStar Energy, LP. Greehey's intent, in part, was for the Lake to support the success of first-generation families at OLLU. Led by OLLU alumna Alma Bustillo, our Family Relations program supports all students served by OLLU.
