Dr. Pena to present Moody Professor lecture March 5

Presentation titled, "Counselor Training of Heritage Speakers of Spanish: Language and Culture in Context."

Dr. Ezequiel Peña, Our Lady of the Lake University's (OLLU) 2012-2013 Moody Professor, will present his public lecture on Tuesday, March 5 from 12:20-1:20 p.m. in Providence Hall, West Social Room (PWSR).

He is an assistant professor of psychology, Training Director of the Counseling Psychology doctoral program, and Director of the Psychological Services for Spanish Speaking Populations.

He will present his research on counselor training of heritage speakers of Spanish that was funded by the Hogg Foundation for Mental Health. (Heritage speakers of Spanish are Spanish speakers who grew up speaking Spanish in the home yet received most, if not all, of their formal education in English.) Dr. Peña serves on the leadership council of the National Latina/o Psychological Association and as President of the Bexar County Psychological Association.

His research interests are in Spanish-language psychotherapy, supervision, and training, multicultural psychology, and the intersections of cultural identity. Dr. Peña teaches courses in Latina/o psychology, multicultural counseling, and family processes across cultures, in addition to providing supervision in English and Spanish at OLLU’s Community Counseling Service.

The Moody Professorship is a shared program with the University of the Incarnate Word (UIW). it was established in 1971 through a gift from the Moody Foundation of Galveston. It provides two endowed professorships each year - one at OLLU and one at UIW. Moody professors from both universities present lectures on each campus.

The 2012-2013 Moody Professor from UIW is Dr. Sally Said, professor of Spanish and co-chair of the Modern Languages department. She will present her lecture April 15, 2013 from noon-1:15 p.m. in the Blue Room.
