OLLU celebrates first nursing graduates

In 2011, OLLU announced the addition of the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (RN to BSN). This December, the University congratulates the first four graduates of the program – Kristi A. Hill-Herrera, Christopher R. Garcia, Maricela Acevedo Villasana and Linda L. Wooding.

Garcia, a native of Houston, chose the program because of its flexibility. He liked that the program was expeditious. Villasana said she also liked its flexibility, which worked well for her since she is a full-time mother. San Antonio native Hill-Herrera said the program was challenging for her because she continued working full time, and completed the clinical assignments and kept up with everything else. “I already had a bachelor’s and master’s degree from the Lake, and I enjoyed those experiences. Plus, I knew the department chair, and I knew the program would be solid,” said Hill-Herrera.

The RN to BSN is completely online and is designed for students who have earned an RN through an associate’s degree or diploma program. The degree allows students to complete the four-year bachelor’s program through a completely online program in as soon as two years. The RN to BSN focuses on nursing informatics, health assessment, evidence-based nursing research, community and public health nursing, healthcare ethics and current trends in nursing. Wanda Sparks, RN, PhD, is the chair of OLLU’s Nursing Department. She has more than 20 years nursing experience in private, public and military healthcare facilities. In addition, she has taught nursing for more than a decade. “One of the cardinal rules in any profession is to deal with people and situations as they are, not as you wish them to be,” said Dr. Sparks. “The nursing program at OLLU is about working with students to both identify and develop their sense of professional purpose. With purpose comes new responsibilities, visions, goals and opportunities. We plant the seed of prosperity to position each graduating nurse with the skills to succeed.”

The RN to BSN program is available at a reduced tuition rate and is offered in non-traditional formats to allow professionals to balance work and school. Additional information on the nursing program offered at OLLU can be accessed by visiting the OLLU Admissions Office online or calling 210-431-3961.
