Alumna is rising media star

From Mexico to Miami. From immigrant to network news anchor. The unfolding story of Arantxa Loizaga gets better all the time.

Loizaga came to San Antonio several years ago to help her mother and two sisters open a restaurant. When the eatery folded, she became the host of a local TV magazine show for Telemundo.

Before long, she began reporting for KWEX-TV and enrolled at Our Lady of the Lake University. Loizaga was promoted to anchor and won two Lone Star Emmy Awards while maintaining a 3.75 GPA. Two months after graduating, she scored an exclusive interview with President Obama.

From The White House, the immigrant got the President to discuss immigration reform. How could she top that? Loizaga will move to South Florida and become co-anchor of Univision’s weekend newscast. She starts in September.

“It’s a great honor,” says Loizaga (BA Mass Communication 2012). “I’m very excited and humbled at the same time.”

She is not going alone. Loizaga is moving with her sister,Thais, and a stray dog she picked up from OLLU. Loizaga found “Milo,” a Terrier mix, walking in the parking lot near the University Wellness and Activities Center three years ago.

“A little piece of the Lake is going with me to Miami,” she says.

On Monday, Loizaga began working Univision’s popular morning show, Despierta America, replacing Satcha Pretto, who is on maternity leave.

“It’s an amazing opportunity,” says Loizaga, who has worked for KWEX-TV for the past seven years. “I wanted to see how far I could get in my career because I have a passion for what I do. I love talking to people and educating my community. It’s hard to let go of what I have but I feel I can still help my community in my new position. I can reach more hearts and minds.”
